Breads & pastries

We make our bread the old-fashioned way, using only natural ingredients: top quality flour, water, just enough sea salt, yeast and, most importantly, plenty of time. Our doughs take between 12 and 48 hours to rise. This results in wonderful ‘real’ bread that is easily digestible and naturally delicious.

Our pastries, made with premium French pastry butter, are exceptional in flavour and texture. Sweet fillings include crème patissière, home-made fruit curds, Belgian chocolate and the best quality fruit. Our sausage rolls are generously filled with locally-sourced free range meat. Cheese straws are laced with punchy farmhouse cheeses.

Daily Bread

Breads & pastries usually available daily Monday to Saturday:

  • Holtwhites white, 100% wholemeal, 50/50 and multigrain tin loaves, bloomers and bread rolls
  • Chase sourdough
  • Baguette and ‘Pain de Campagne’
  • Ciabatta loaves and rolls
  • 100% rye or seeded spelt & rye bread (wheat-free but not gluten-free)
  • Sweet breads and buns: fruit & tea bread (except Fridays), chelsea buns, belgian buns, coconut buns, “Sticky Willy” buns (aka iced fingers)
  • Sweet pastries: croissant, pain au chocolat, almond croissant, pain aux raisins
  • Savoury pastries: sausage rolls

Other Specials

Other ‘specials’ are only available on certain days of the week:

  • Monday – Five-grain sourdough
  • Tuesday – Walnut bread
  • Wednesday – Kalamata olive sourdough; Irish soda bread
  • Thursday – Raisin & walnut bread
  • Friday – New York Deli rye sourdough; chocolate bread; focaccia with rosemary & sea salt
  • Saturday – Kalamata olive ciabatta; focaccia with rosemary & sea salt; special sourdough (changes weekly), fruit danish, chocolate twist, luxury cheese straw, ‘Pasteis de Nata’ Portugese custard tart…

On Sunday mornings we offer only a small range of breads and pastries: French loaves, baguettes, Chase sourdough, croissant, pain au chocolat, almond croissant and pain aux raisins.

Please check our specials board, as daily specials may change from time to time. We also recommend that you call the bakery in advance to order a particular item to avoid disappointment, as popular breads and pastries can sell out early on busy days.


When it comes to cakes, we lean towards simple but delicious variations on classics. Best-sellers include our sensational double chocolate brownies, comforting tea-infused bread pudding, moist Earl Grey fruitcake and gluten-free orange & almond cake. Our hand-decorated gingerbread biscuits are a popular after-school treat for kids.

Like everything else at Holtwhites, we make all of our cakes and biscuits from scratch. We only use real ingredients, such as organic flour, free-range eggs and real butter, because we want everything to taste as good as it looks.

Our cake selection can vary from day to day, so it’s best to visit the bakery to see what we’ve got. If you want us to make something in particular, give us as much notice as possible and we’ll try our best to oblige.
